Return to top Return to top A few comments on how to properly measure a donkey: First and foremost, purchase an equine measuring stick. One style ranges from 10 to 18 hands, another style is specifically made for the miniature donkeys/horses. Generally these are aluminum sticks that are lightweight, fairly accurate and easy to use. They include a built-in level, when properly placed over the donkey’s withers, they give one the correct height. Note, the stick should be perpendicular or perfectly vertical, and the donkey should be standing on clean, level ground such as concrete or pavement. A slightly uneven surface or grassy pasture will not give one an accurate height. A MEASURING TAPE IS NOT ACCURATE! Some shows (such as the annual Mule Days in Bishop, California), require all mature jacks to be measured prior to the halter classes to verify they’ve been entered in the correct class (i.e. - mammoth jacks, large standard jacks, standard jacks or miniature jacks). An equine measuring stick can be purchased through many equine mail-order catalogs and generally run around $35.00. They often appear on Ebay, and can sometimes be procured for $20 - $30 there. Donkeys purchased from The Ass-Pen Ranch will be guaranteed the height advertised (within ˝”). A slight variation will sometimes occur depending on the length of the donkey’s hooves when they were measured.
